Motivation

What motivates you? Is it a dream or goal you are seeking after? Maybe it is your family? Is the the approval of others? Or maybe if you are honest it’s just this selfish need inside of you that just wants to be noticed. Whatever your reasons may be, we seldom accomplish anything without some source motivating us. Some sources are good and others are less than perfect motivators.

We all need some sort of motivation to accomplish anything worthwhile but it’s important to figure out what is motivating you. The purpose of motivation is to accomplish some goal. The purpose of achieving such a goal is to gain a sense of satisfaction. Whether that satisfaction is properly brought about depends largely on what our motivation is in the first place. So what is it that drives you towards your goal?

Selfish vs Selfless

Self serving motivations often lead to a lack of satisfaction or only a temporary feeling that leaves us empty. On the other hand, selfless motivation will never leave us unsatisfied. But by our very nature, this form of motivation is hardest to achieve. No matter how hard we try, there is always some small grain or selfish reasoning that motivates towards a goal. It may not be there from the start but always seems to find a way to sneak in. Our ultimate motivation in life should be to glorify God in everything we do. Any motivation outside of this lacks the ability to be selfless.

What can we do to make sure our motivations stay pure? Stay focused on God. Put Him at the center of all that motivates you. Continuously ask yourself, am I doing this to make myself look good or to make God look good? Am I exalting myself or am I exalting God? What motivates you today?
