Sometimes life sucks
I know, that’s rough opening for a post but it’s the truth. There are times in everyone’s life that it feels like you just can’t catch a break. No matter which way you turn, whatever you may try, whomever’s advice you follow, sometimes prosperity is a goal that seems too far out of reach. But maybe it’s just a matter of adjusting our perspective for a bit. Take a long look at what’s really going on.
Reaching Our Goals
Can’t seem to reach that goal of prosperity?
Maybe we have a wrong vision of what prosperity is. Our own goals can become our biggest enemies in life. Perhaps what we consider normal is not what we were cut out for. (Normal is boring anyways.) What is normal for one person is not achievable by others. Honestly, God made each of us unique. Each of us have a plan and path laid out. Oftentimes our frustrations lie in the fact that we see the lives of other people and begin comparing, desiring their situation, even becoming jealous. This is an unhealthy obsession that only fuels our rough outlook.

Yes hard times do come our way. Honestly, if you never face hard times you aren’t doing something right. A fulfilled life requires risks. Fulfillment is what we seek in life. I believe that the only true fulfillment for us is to be in the center of God’s will. In his book Desiring God, John Piper states that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” So what exactly are we seeking for satisfaction?
Who Let You Down?
If you can truly say that life sucks, who is it that let you down? It’s easy to try to put the blame on God. We see people throughout the Bible express their enmity towards God. This is a natural response, if you are human, and ordinarily it helps us work through our situation, strengthening our relationship with God. Paul reminds us that God will never let us down (see Hebrews 13:5 among others).
So if we believe God’s Word and we know that it’s not God that let us down what is it then? It may have been some person, maybe a role model or a leader in your life. Maybe it was your own skewed perspective on how life should be. Our plans for our life are not always God’s plans. His plans are so much greater. Therefore, we have to learn to look to Him to be our fulfillment instead of seeking our own goals. Goals are good to have, but we should be cautious about letting our goals overshadow God’s plan. This is where discontentment sets in. This is how we get sidetracked and lose focus. And this is what makes is seem like life sucks, when the reality is quite the opposite.
